He is trained in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. He is now promoting Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing [EMDR, a form of therapy initially designed to treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder [PTSD]. Currently, our team of therapists from The Mind Faculty are using EMDR to resolve associated memory loops and locked-in memories, something that is also a major psychopathology in obsessive-compulsive disorder]. Apart from being a psychotherapist, he also believes in the use of medication when need be.
A/Prof Dr Stephen has a keen research interest in many forms of psychological therapy including art therapy and eclectic forms of psychological reform. His belief in the Bio-Psycho-Social approach in mental health is what keeps him going. Bio-Psycho-Social : ‘biological’ referring to the use of medicines [if necessary], ‘psychological’ referring to the patient’s personal issues and thinking processes, and ‘social’ referring to their environmental issues or stressors.
