Treatments for Depression

Depression (or a depressive disorder) is a psychological illness characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness, hopelessness, helplessness, worthlessness, and/or guilt. This page discusses the treatments available for depression.

Psychotherapy and medications can be used, together or not, to treat depression. Please consult your doctor for details and recommendations.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is better known as talk therapy and psychological counseling. It involves talking with a therapist, and working together with the therapist to find possible ways to solve the depression.

Medications

Various medications can be used to control the symptoms of depression. Such medications may come with possible risks and side effects, and some may not be used long-term.

Note: Some psychologists may not be certified to prescribe medications; ‘psychiatrists’ are psychologists certified to prescribe medications.
